At 0930 hours, the advanced battalions of Stavtsev’s 190th and Makar’ev’s 97th Rifle Divisions in Perekrestov’s 65th Rifle Corps attacked and destroyed the military settlements on the west slope of strong point Camel. An hour before, the main forces of Makar’ev’s rifle division and Zorin’s 144th Rifle Division had attacked past Camel into the operational depths of the Japanese defenses. Immediately, Makar’ev and Zorin formed forward detachments, each consisting of a tank brigade, a heavy self-propelled artillery regiment, and a battalion or regiment of motorized infantry, and ordered them to spearhead their divisions’ subsequent advance.

Their successful actions permitted the main forces of Krylov’s army to advance as planned at 0830 hours on 9 August and advance on schedule through and beyond the Japanese fortified region. The advanced battalions’ success also negated any further need for an extensive 28 SOVIET OPERATIONAL AND TACTICAL COMBAT IN MANCHURIA, 1945 artillery preparation.
