Alcohol feeding (3 and 9 g/kg) produced changes in the histochemically measured activity and distribution of lysosomal enzymes in the epithelial cells of the villi of the intestine of mice (Kilkowska et al. 1976). Major alterations were Alcohol and the Gastrointestinal Tract 51 an increase in the activity of beta-glucoronidase and beta-galactosidase in the early phase of the experiments, followed by a decrease after prolonged alcohol administration.

In subgroups with alcoholic cirrhosis or fatty liver this incidence was even higher (Table 8). An association between severe chronic liver disease and the development of peptic ulcer has been assumed (Thiel 1978). Although the high incidence of ulcer disease in alcoholic cirrhosis (Bode 1979) might in part be related to the liver cirrhosis itself, the observation that the same ulcer incidence is observed in alcoholics with only minor hepatic lesions (Table 8) does not support this hypothesis. The incidence of ulcer disease in 3 of 4 studies mentioned above is higher than that reported in the general popUlation (Cooke 1978; Langman 1973).

However, an inhibition using 1% ethanol was not observed by others using a similar experimental design (Chang et al. 1967). Alcohol also inhibits amino acid absorption in vivo (Table 9). This was shown following alcohol feeding by gastric tubes in rats (Kuo and Shanbour 1978) and using intestinal perfusion in man (Israel et al. 1969). With concentrations of ethanol that inhibited alanine transport from the mucosal to the serosal side of rabbit jejunum (Kuo and Shanbour 1978) the flux of alanine from the serosal to mucosal compartment was also greater than in the controls.
